Based in **Sacramento, California, US**, this role is integral to shaping the institution's artistic vision, engaging diverse audiences, and advancing the discourse around contemporary art practices. The Senior Curator will be responsible for the strategic development and management of the contemporary art program, including acquisitions, exhibitions, and related scholarly research. You will identify and cultivate relationships with artists, galleries, and collectors to enrich the permanent collection. Conceptualizing, planning, and executing high-profile exhibitions will be a core function, involving loan negotiations, catalogue production, and public programming. Key responsibilities encompass conducting in-depth research on emerging and established contemporary artists, contributing scholarly essays to exhibition catalogues and publications, and delivering engaging public lectures and gallery talks. You will collaborate closely with education, marketing, and development departments to ensure the success and accessibility of the contemporary art program. The curator will also play a vital role in fundraising efforts, donor cultivation, and grant writing to support acquisitions and exhibition initiatives. Overseeing the care and preservation of the collection in partnership with conservation staff is also paramount. We are looking for a candidate with a Master's degree or Ph.D. in Art History, Curatorial Studies, or a related field, with a specialization in contemporary art. A minimum of 7 years of progressive curatorial experience in a museum or gallery setting is required, with a demonstrated track record of organizing significant exhibitions and building collections. Exceptional research, writing, and public speaking skills are essential. A broad knowledge of international contemporary art, critical theory, and museum best practices is mandatory.
